From her home perched on the cusp of the ancient Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, artist and fashion designer Jenny Kee lives life immersed in nature.
A self-described hippie, Kee spent a locked-down 2021 embracing yoga, meditation and bushwalking –– all of which she’ll be bringing into 2022, along with her vibrant, irrepressible energy that’s as bold and bright as the blood-red waratahs that surround her home. For Kee, the Australian wilderness inspires everything from paintings to her can’t-imagine-life-without-it red lipstick.
Read on to discover how Kee sparks her creative energy and why she’s dancing into the New Year…
“My signature style when it comes to fashion is colour, colour, colour! My beauty look is natural – nothing but the fabulous REN Clean Skincare moisturiser, enhanced by Laura Mercier’s blush in ‘Strawberry’.
“That is, until I step out as my ‘Jenny Kee’ persona! For a more spectacular look, I start with a natural base of NARS tinted moisturiser, then add blush, Charlotte Tilbury’s kohl and Hourglass mascara on the eyes. And last but not least, my signature waratah-red lipstick. I love ‘Ruby Woo’ by M.A.C.”

“The COVID-19 lockdown gave me isolation and I loved being able to really concentrate on what matters most to me: my meditation, yoga, extra-long bush walks exploring the wonders of nature! In 2022 I want these as my priorities for living my life – my art and work will flow from that; I’m starting a new scarf design, a new series of waratah paintings and some exciting new collaborations (shh!).
“My highlight this year was the release of the documentary Step Into Paradise about my creative life and friendship with [my long-term collaborator] Linda Jackson, with all its highs and lows. It dazzles with colour and creativity. We tell an honest story and are bonded in our love of nature.”
“I plan on gifting Le Labo fragrance gift sets to family and close friends. And for myself, a new Le Labo fragrance is at the top of my wishlist.”
“I’ll be spending New Year’s Eve tucked up in the Blue Mountains, au naturel – a low-‘Kee’ hippie, meditating with friends and then dancing into the New Year!
“I’m spending time these holidays with my family – my daughter Grace and my granddaughter Estella – and friends, swimming at Bondi and Palm Beach. Catch me in my vintage Jenny Kee cotton print jerseys, May Gibbs beachwear and sun hat. And, most importantly, my Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF 30 sunscreen with a restorative moisturiser for after- sun.”
“To always use masses of moisturiser for body and face, and always wear sunscreen when outside!”

“I’m reading Poison Is Medicine by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche and She Is Haunted by Paige Clark. I love watching movies at our old local cinema, Mount Vic Flicks and listening to my daughter Grace’s excellent playlists – Bill Withers, Al Green, Bonnie Raitt, Marvin Gaye… she has the best taste!
“Grace is also the best cook, in the style of Alison Roman and Yotam Ottolenghi: greens, grains, legumes, seafood and yummy summer fruits. And when I’m in Sydney, I love going for lunch at Lucky Kwong.”
